GETTING TO KNOW ROSIE

Q.  Where were you born and raised?

A. I was born in Vietnam and raised in Virginia.  Unlike most Vietnamese immigrants, though, I didn't come here after the war.  I came before. My family was part of a select group of 20 families whose father or mother was hired by the U.S. to come to America to work for the government.  We settled outside of D.C in the Virginia suburbs where my brother and sisters and I attended private and public schools.

Q. What was your favorite childhood memory?

A. My father bought a convertible Triumph when I was six, and he would squeeze all four of us in it and take us down to "Duck Lake" and feed the ducks.  My mother gave each of us a bag of "Wonder Bread" crumbs and we would spend the hour feeding and chasing, laughing and running from these crazy birds.

Q.  Besides your parents, who has inspired you?

A. Sophocles Papas, my guitar teacher. Around ten I picked up the guitar and started playing folk songs.  My parents learned there was a neighbor who played the guitar and knocked on his door, asking if he could give me lessons.  He did more than that.  Mr. Papas was a world-renowned classical guitarist who owned a music store in DC, composed music and performed with artists from around the world, including Andre Segovia. He introduced me to this world, taking me to concerts, recitals, receptions, and when I needed a place to have a teen melt-down, his door was always open, with music to calm my soul.

Q.  Best job you've ever had?

A. Besides real estate, of course, the best job I had was working as an Associate Producer for "60 Minutes" in Washington DC. I worked with a husband and wife producing team and we did segments as well as hour-long documentaries.  Our style was not investigative.  We did profiles and touching stories.  We spent months with our subjects, lived in their "hip pockets," listened to their stories.  And then we shared them, visually, emotionally, honestly.  I learned a lot about how to listen, to have empathy, to respect all people from different paths of life.  These skills have served me well in working with my clients in real estate.
